In one such visit to the golf club with buddy Arbaaz, while watching a game he is given a chance to putt and he excels in all attempts. Probably this is the first movie on golf on the Hindi screen and might just motivate some people who are not so well off to take up golf ( normally called a rich man's game.) The story is about a loser from an economically weak section Nawazuddin who manages his livelihood by collecting hafta ( protection money) from rich people after his business of selling underwear fails. There is a fair chance that you will walk out with a smile and some of the jokes will stay with you. Asif Basra's Kishan Lal chacha stands out as a cut above the rest as Ali's mentor come man Friday.įreaky Ali is the kind of movie which could be missed but should you walk into the theater you will not regret making the decision. Seema Biswas is brilliant as the earthy and protective mother of Ali. To the credit of the director none of the support cast right from Nikitan Dheer to Arbaaz Khan are great actors but they deliver adequate performances - though Nikitan Dheer seriously needs to work on his comic acting or simply refuse such roles in future. The director has very intelligently kept the running time of the movie two hours and a well written screenplay ensures that this one does not drag at any point of time. The plot moves from one story point to other with a reasonable pace. The other good part about Freaky Ali is that the director has kept everything checked nowhere does the emotion gets too heavy. Some of the humor lines are bound to make you laugh and you laugh repeatedly developing an instant connect with the proceedings. Of course the writer deserves some credit here. The best part of Freaky Ali of course is the sincere earthiness that Nawazuddin brings to the role. His comedy is brilliant. It is more of a warm hearted weekend entertainer, as long as you keep your expectations in check, the movie surprises you. Before you take your expectations sky high after reading this let me warn you. There were times when you would wonder if that was a fluke.įreakly Ali in that sense is a bit of a redemption of the director more than anything else. In short as a director Sohail Khan did show some promise with that one before he went seriously downhill with one dud after the other. It has a personal favourite song called "Deewana main chala". This one was a sweet love story between Kajol and Salman. To those of you who care about such facts Director Sohail Khan's only other box office success till date is a movie called Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. If you like low brow humour "arre deflated hue tyre" types jokes and think daddy and caddy is a brilliant rhyme, then this movie is for you. You will laugh in a few places but that's about it. The story is trite, the dialogues are crass, the humour is revolting. Seema Biswas as the mother and Asif Baasra as his coach cum caddy do their best with stereotype roles. But then nothing in this movie makes sense.
He is also believable as a golfer though it beats me why he can't choose his own clubs after winning so many tournaments. Nawazzudin plays Ali with an innocent enthusiasm which makes his character likeable.
And yada yada yada toll Jackie Shroff comes in at the last minute and makes you actually smile with his idiotic antics. The reigning champion, an erstwhile Prince of course cannot stand such garib sadak chhap people on the golf course and decides to teach him a lesson.

And of course he becomes a pro in no time and also acquires a Barbie looking Amy Jackson as a girlfriend. His neighbor works on that golf course and decides that he will learn golf and become a 'bada' admi. On one such hafta collection trip he lands up at a golf course and plays a couple of good shots naturally. As a side business he and his buddy also collect hftas for a goon called Danger bhai (more moronic comedy here that I will not elaborate). Ali is a poor man who lives in a basti and sells chaddis for a living, because of which no one will marry him. I could go on and on but you get the drift. The movie is stuck in a time warp with its stale tapori jokes, lame humour like calling a person with leukoderma 'nakli angrez', some double innuendos and ridden with cliches like the amir-garib divide and praying to Allah and Bhagwan when things go wrong etc. I guess Nawazuddin Siddique was thrown in to add some respectability to this idiotic caper though he must have had some freaky reasons to want to do it. Freaky Ali is a total Salman Khan family production, written directed and produced by Sohail Khan and starring Arbaaz Khan in a main role.
